What I’m Reading!

I posted a short status on facebook the other day.  I asked what people were reading these days.  I was amazed at the response I got.  So many people reading so many different things.  I had quite the list of books to look through.  My thought was that I could post the same question on my blog and reach even more people with the question.  So here’s something to get you started.

I recently finished “Good to Great” by Jim Collins.  Excellent book by the way.  I would recommend it for anyone who is looking to step up the game of their company or church.  I’m currently in the middle of Jim Putman’s “Church is a Team Sport.”  Very good read.

All this to say, what are you reading?  Name of the book, author and even some of your thoughts would be awesome.

  1. I’m reading four books right now (matches my scatter-brained approach to things): The Limits of Power — The End of American Exceptionalism by Andrew Bacevich; The Trouble with Paris — Following Jesus in a World of Plastic Promises by Mark Sayers;Fierce Conversations — Achieving Success at Work & in Life, One Conversation at a Time by Susan Scott; and Between the Tackles by Tom Houck. The sub-titles of Paris and Fierce Conversations pretty well describe what they’re about. Limits is an examination of the economic, political and military crises facing America and reminds me of how very limited we as individuals and as a nation are in our ability to create meaningful change. (Real change and real power over the forces that really matter, i.e., evil and death are available only through God’s resurrection power — my tho’t, not the book’s.) Between the Tackles is a look at Christian living through the lens of football analogy. This is the book our Tuesday Morning @ Panera Bread Men’s Group is using. Anyway, there you have it — probably more than you wanted to hear — but …. <

  2. I have trouble reading more than one at a time so I would like to give an idea of what I have read recently and what I have on my shelf: Unfashionable and Do I Know God? by Tullian Tchividjian. Prodigal God by Keller. All three were good reads. Raising Purity by Hiestad (reviewing). On the shelf is Primal by Batterson, Preaching Christ in All of Scripture by Clowney, Counterfeit Gods by Keller, Why You Think the Way You Do by Sunshine, and Love and War by Eldredge. For fun I am reading Chronicles of Narnia again.
